COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The Howard Payne Lady Jacket basketball team got their first win in the 2008-2009 season opener under new head coach Joshua Prock, 84-73, over Colorado College Friday evening at Reid Gymnasium.
The Lady Jackets had three players in double figures and used its depth to post an 84-73 victory..
Howard Payne fell behind early but battled back to take the lead at 10-9 on a layup by
Katy Sarem with 14:58 left in the first.
Colorado College took its final lead with 10:58 remaining in the first half, 16-14, but HPU countered with a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead with 8:29 remaining. HPU extended their lead to 13 points on a three-pointer by
Stephanie Brewer with 1:30 before the half.
Despite CC shooting over 50% from the field in the first half, HPU held a 39-30 halftime advantage.
The Lady Jackets led 47-33 with 16:07 to play in the game, but Colorado College scored 11 of the next 12 points to slice the deficit to four points.
CC’s August converted on a pair of free throws with 5:59 remaining to bring them with in four points in the second. Howard Payne then used a 17-6 run over the 4:43 to take a 15-point lead, it’s biggest of the game.
Katy Sarem led Howard Payne with 19 points.
Brittany Zamora made all eight of her free throws and finished with 15 points, while
Hope Hohertz added 10 points and 5 steals.
Hansberry poured in a game-high 21 points, and teammate Melanie Auguste added 18 points and 6 assists for Collorado College. Both players had 7 rebounds each.
The Lady Jackets (1-0) and Colorado College (0-1) will complete their two-game set on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
