Volleyball Goes 2-2 On Opening Weekend

HARRISONBURG, Virginia – The Howard Payne volleyball team opened up the 2009 season at the Eastern Mennonite University Tournament and went 2-2 for the weekend. The Lady Jackets got wins over Mary Baldwin College and host Eastern Mennonite University. 

Howard Payne on day one posted losses to North Carolina Wesleyan 0-3 (20-25, 19-25, 19-25) and Lynchburg College 0-3 (15-25, 20-25, 19-25). Tamika Heline played solid offensively with 12 and 10 kills respectively in the two games. Kristin Hammond also played well with 10 digs in each match. 

On day two, the Lady Jackets picked up wins over Mary Baldwin College 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-22) and host Eastern Mennonite 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-21). Amanda Gutierrez picked up her game and recorded nine kills versus Mary Baldwin and eight against Eastern Mennonite with above a .300 attack pct. 

Amber Cantu-Curry, who had 56 assists, 27 digs, and 10 service aces for the weekend was named to the All-Tournament team.

Howard Payne now stands at 2-2 on the year and will play next on Wednesday in Kerrville in American Southwest Conference action versus Schreiner University.
