Volleyball Named To AVCA Team Academic Award List

2008 HPU Lady Jacket Volleyball Team

BROWNWOOD, Texas – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced today that 409 teams have earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2008-2009 season. Howard Payne was named to the list for the first time and is the only American Southwest Conference team to make the list.

“I am extremely proud of our players being named as one of the recipients of the AVCA Team Academic Award,” said Ken Carver HPU head volleyball coach. “Since I was hired at HPU over four years ago, this award has been a goal for our team each and every year.”

During Carver's time at HPU, his teams have consistently maintained a cumulative grade point average above 3.00 and with each passing year it has climbed steadily. One of the core values Carver has stressed with his team is excellence in everything they do whether it be on the court, in the classroom, or in their personal lives.

The Lady Jackets had a 3.31 overall cumulative GPA for the 2008-2009 academic year. Howard Payne had a good year on the court as well finishing with their first winning season since 2001 at 16-13 overall.

“This award, coupled with being named the ASC Team Sportsmanship honoree for the second consecutive year and having our first winning season since 2001 as a program, demonstrates our players focus and desire to be well-rounded student-athletes,” added Carver “My hope is for this latest honor to continue to inspire our players to even greater heights.”

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
