Dawson and Blalock Named to Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team

Travis Dawson and Stacey Blalock

RICHARDSON, Texas –– Howard Payne's Travis Dawson and Stacey Blalock were named to the 2008 Distinguished Scholar-Athlete in their respective American Southwest Conference winter sport, the ASC office announced on Wednesday.

Overall, 23 student-athletes from ASC men's and women's basketball teams were named to the Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Team.

The honor, in its first year, recognizes student-athletes that achieve a higher level of academic achievement (a 3.20 grade-point average or better) while competing as a starter or important reserve on their team. From that list – limited to one nominee per school in each ASC championship sport – the Sports Information Directors from the conference's 15 member institutions vote on a Distinguished Scholar-Athlete from each sport.

Travis Dawson  Sr. Ex. & Sport Science  Valera, TX
Travis played in first 13 of the 25 regular season games for the Yellow Jackets before a knee injury ended his year. Dawson started in eight games to start the season. He was averaging 7 points per game, leading the team in field goal percentage this season, and was shooting 43.8% from behind the arc in his career at HPU before his injury. Travis plans on teaching and coaching after graduation.

Stacey Blalock  Sr. Elementary Education  Magnolia, TX
Blalock was named to the All-ASC team this season for the first time. She has played in over 100 games for the Lady Jackets and has surpassed 1000 points and 500 rounds in her career at HPU. Off the court she volunteers at the Head Start program of Brownwood and plans on teaching after graduation.

Both honorees were named to the 2007-08 ASC Academic All-Conference Team.
