Longtime "Voice of the Jackets" To Receive Honorary Doctorate

BROWNWOOD – Dallas Huston will be the recipient of the honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Howard Payne University during the commencement ceremony at 10 a.m. on December 13. This is the highest honor bestowed by the university. The ceremony will be held at Brownwood's First Baptist Church.

“Dallas Huston, the Voice of the Yellow Jackets, has brought much recognition to Howard Payne during his distinguished career as a sportscaster and now as a minister,” said Dr. Lanny Hall, university president. “An exemplary Christian leader, Dallas gives of himself to others on a daily basis. It is an honor for our institution to honor him in this special way.”

Huston was born in Corpus Christi but moved to Brownwood at the age of two and has been a Brownwood resident ever since. The “voice” of the HPU Yellow Jackets and Brownwood Lions, Huston is a bi-vocational minister, serving as pastor of Center City Baptist Church. He started broadcasting in 1963 as a deejay at KBWD. Working as a sportscaster for more than forty years, he provides colorful commentary for football, basketball and baseball games.

Receiving the Basic Church Ministry certification from the Jackson Center for Evangelism in 1997, Huston was ordained as a minister by the First Baptist Church of Brownwood and began preaching at various locations throughout Central Texas before being called as pastor by Center City Baptist Church earlier this year. He also shares his faith and testimony through a weekly Christian radio show on Sundays and a men's Bible study on Monday nights.

During the 1970s, he was instrumental in organizing the Brown County Texas Teenage Baseball Association and has been a longtime supporter.

A frequent motivational speaker, Huston has been invited to speak at schools, men's prayer groups, graduations and civic organizations.

Huston has accumulated numerous awards through the years. The 2008 recipient of the HPU Medal of Service Award, he has also been inducted into the HPU Sports Hall of Fame. Huston has been named the “Sportscaster of the Year” four times by the Lone Star Conference and once by the American Southwest Conference. In 1999, he was named the best high school sportscaster in Texas by Texas Monthly magazine and has been honored twice by the Texas High School Coaches Association. He was also elected into the “Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame” in 2007.

He and his wife, Linda, have been married for 25 years. The couple has four children: Valorie Huston, Christian Huston, Dena Fortune and Lance Rasch. They also have nine grandchildren.
