Volleyball Receives ASC SAAC Sportsmanship Award

RICHARDSON, Texas - The Howard Payne University volleyball team is the winner of the American Southwest Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Team Sportsmanship Award for 2008 in volleyball, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

“Our team is humbled and honored to receive the Team Sportsmanship Award for volleyball for the second year in a row," said Ken Carver head women's volleyball coach. "It is gratifying to know opposing coaches, players, fans and officials recognize our program's attempt to humbly live out on a daily basis not only what it means to possess and display good sportsmanship, but how a Christian student-athlete should act in the competitive arena."

This is the second consecutive year the Lady Jackets have won the sportsmanship award. Howard Payne finished with its first winning season since 2001 at 16-13 overall and just missed making the ASC postseason tournament.

"I am proud of our young ladies and the character they posses as well as the example they show on and off the court. Win or lose these young women represent Howard Payne University in a honorable and worthy manner,” Carver added.

The Howard Payne football was also awarded the sportsmanship award for the second consecutive year.

The award, in its second athletic year, honors the member institution in each ASC championship sport that best displays positive qualities of sportsmanship and fair play from its student-athletes, coaches and fans throughout the season. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committees from the conference's 15 member institutions vote on the recipients.
