WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Howard Payne Lady Jackets got down by 15 in the first half and could not regain their early lead and lost to Midwestern State University 54-62 in an exhibition game Tuesday evening.
The Lady Jackets jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the opening minutes before Midwestern went on a 21-0 run. With 9:09 Midwestern led 8-22.
HPU fought back to within 8, 18-26, on a jumper by
Tiffany Warner with 2:24 left in the first half. Midwestern capped off the end of the first half with a 5-1 run to make the half time score 19-34 Midwestern.
Howard Payne gave up 27 first half rebounds, 15 of them offensive. HPU only shot 17% from the field in the first half to Midwestern’s 37%. Midwestern also forced 15 Howard Payne turnovers.
The Lady Jackets started the second half on a 9-2 run sparked by fastbreak baskets by
Katy Sarem. HPU cut the MSU lead to 8, 30-38, on a layup by
Sarah Jockers with 14:40 left.
Midwestern was able to withstand the HPU push and held on to defeat Howard Payne 62-54.
HPU finished the game shooting 34% from the floor and 88% from the free-throw line. HPU was out-rebounded 48-31 and committed 21 turnovers.
Midwestern was led by Brittany Bryant with a game high 14 points. Katiya Jackson added 12 rebounds.
Sarah Pfiester and Tiffany Warner each finished with 8 points for the Lady Jackets.
Elaine Hobbs and
Amanda Haymakeradded 7 points each. Sarah Jockers had a team high 9 rebounds.
The Lady Jackets will open up the 2008-09 season in Colorado Springs, CO at the Colorado College Tournament on Friday, November 21.
